More Topps & Bazooka

(1958-69)

After Bowman stopped making cards, Topps faced little competition in the card market other than from Fleer Gum, which it defeated in court and in retail sales. Cards became more popular each year, and the company responding by printing all sorts of special cards — adding multiple cards of stars like Willie Mays and Mickey Mantle to every set, and some featuring more than one player. Topps also put an array of inserts into packs, like the 1967 posters and 1969 Deckle Edge cards pictured below.

From 1959 to 1971, Topps made cards that could be cut off the backs of Bazooka boxes. During the first year, Bazooka boxes featured one large card, and in subsequent years — there was no set in 1969-70 — three small cards. These are far tougher to find than regular Topps cards, as the value of commons indicates.
