Publications

Making it possible to record the precise details of a game, and take home a keepsake, scorecards were sold at ballparks as far back as the late 19th century. By the mid-20th century, they were adorned with colorful ads, which reflected the art of the times. A number of the programs pictured below are autographed as well. Besides scorecards, a variety of publications emerged to keep fans connected to the game in its early days, regardless of the season, such as magazines, guides and yearbooks. The first publication pictured below is a minor league program from 1907, which includes one of my favorites, Eddie Grant, in the lineup. A member of the famous Lost Battalion, Grant was killed in action during the closing days of WWI, making him the most prominent baseball player ever to lose his life in battle. Also included is a fantastic scorecard from a 1941 game in St. Louis between a couple barnstorming teams, one led by Bob Feller, and the other led by Satchel Paige.
